This month for the Strong and Empowered Women Series we talked with Christi Fegueroa from Delta Life – Katy. She highlights her reasons for wanting to lose weight. Hint: they’re not what you’d think. She has so many huge goals for herself and she goes after them with courage and persistence.
She explains why motivation is so important to her and how it has helped get her results so far. She talks about how DLF has motivated her every step of the way and how other members are so important to her.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m 27 years old. I live in Katy, TX. I have 2 dogs.
I’m a DOT supervisor for an oil and gas company called CNG Services. Actually, I’m trying to save more money so I can go back to school. I want to go into the medical field, but first I want to save money and get healthier.
Right now, there are so many options, I am a little confused on what exactly I want to do so I’ll wait to decide while I’m doing school. The medical field is really hard, but I want to try. I know that if I don’t try I will always have that what if.
I do really enjoy my job right now but it is a complete 180 from what I always said I wanted to do in life. So, these are my two big goals I have in my life,
go into medical field and get healthy.
So, I hope by next year, I’m there.
Why did you join Delta Life Fitness?
I joined Delta Life because I needed to be motivated. I needed the Delta women and instructors that back you up. My whole life I struggled with my weight so I figured this would be a really great experience because of the accountability.
It has been proven so with the weekly accountability calls and all. I love it. It’s going really great.
Tell us about your struggle with your weight prior to Delta Life
The majority of my life, I have been overweight.
I don’t remember a time that I wasn’t overweight.
I have done diets and exercised, but I always find myself giving up.
I think the longest I have gone before falling off the wagon was a year. That year, I think I lost about 60 pounds.
was really proud of myself
Then I got really sick and ended up in the hospital with meningitis. From there, it just escalated to me not exercising and not eating right.
My sister got engaged, I’m going on a cruise and London next year, and I just need to do this for myself with all these events coming up.
I saw Delta Life Fitness on Facebook and thought this sounds great.
I was really nervous because I hated going to gyms, but this was an environment where I thought I would feel comfortable. It turned out to be amazing.
The girls are amazing.
It has giving me a lot of confidence.
Now, I don’t have a problem with gyms anymore. I know that people go there to get healthy.
When I lost 60 pounds in 2011, I just ate smaller portions, exercised a whole bunch. I was in college at the time so if I couldn’t workout during the week, I would workout on the weekend.
I would do 5 miles a day and weights and more cardio. I remember eating a lot of salads. I wasn’t good at meal prepping or eating the right amount of food that I should have been eating. I was eating small portions, not of good food, just smaller portions of the food. I know now I wasn’t doing it right.
This time around, I am doing it so much better, I have learned so many things. This time is I eat normal portion but of clean foods like vegetables, lean meat, good carbs. Fruits and vegetables are a lot more filling than processed foods.
The first time, it probably didn’t last because I was always hungry. I didn’t know what I was doing back then. This time around, it is going a lot better.
I have friends who are eating like me now, and we help each other out. It’s so different when you have support
How has Delta Life helped you better understand exercise, nutrition and lifestyle?
It has helped me learn to meal prep. I thought it was pretty intense when I first looked at it, but I got ideas from it and do it my own way.
I have learned how to exercise properly without injuring myself because of my weight. I find it really easy to injure myself if I am not in the right position.
The instructors are very helpful. They have taught me to take it one day at a time, to be patient and progress.
I’m not going to see results overnight.
The instructors are all just great.
Now, instead of just relying on the gym for exercise I stay active outside of the gym too. When I go out of town, I don’t give myself a free pass, I actually want to do something active.
For example, I went to Austin, Texas and drove around with my friend trying to find a hiking trail. We made it into a fun activity. When I went to my cousin’s graduation, I dd the slide right program so I wouldn’t miss my workouts.
It’s just great motivation, even outside of the gym. Being in the gym, Delta Life gives you motivation, but it follows you into your everyday life. It makes you want to eating healthy and be more active.
I love that I’m building endurance.
I run instead of walking up stairs.
It’s just amazing.
It makes me want to move forward and go stronger.
What motivated you, this time, to start focusing on taking care of you?
I just wanted to be a better version of myself.
I have never been healthy.
I was just tired of it.
I want to be healthy.
I want to see myself the way I picture myself.
I have big events coming up, and I don’t want to be unhappy during those times. Not to say that I’m not happy now because I am, but I know that being healthier would put me at another level, more comfortable with myself. For me it’s about being more comfortable and having more confidence in myself.
I started Delta Life Fitness at 383 pounds.
Right now I’m at 345.
I’ve lost about 40 pounds since March.
I’m pretty happy.
I know I can do a lot better.
How has Delta Life made you stronger mentally and physically?
I love the activity level and the endurance I have.
I can go to work and not use the elevator but use the stairs instead. I love that. It’s seems small but to me it’s a huge accomplishment.
Mentally, I just feel better about myself.
Knowing that I’m doing something good.
Coming home and not watching TV, but walking the dogs or putting my workout clothes on and going to the gym.
I just feel better.
Maybe you’re not at your goal yet, but knowing that you’re getting there is great.
One day at a time, you’ll get there.
Delta Life has helped me with my confidence.
I see the changes,
changes in my clothing,
changes in myself.
I went to a workout last Saturday after being off for a week because of doctor’s order. Before I walked in I thought, I’m going to have to walk out. I won’t be able to do it. It’s going to be embarrassing.
When I walked in Delta Life, my whole mindset changed, and I thought I can do this, ten more seconds, no problem.
I remember thinking when I first started that I was going to pass out.
I couldn’t do it.
I couldn’t keep up with everybody but you see the other girls pushing themselves and it motivates you to push harder too.
It’s ot a competitive thing at all. That’s what I love about the environment in the gym. It’s more of pushing each other to do better.
I noticed how I have replaced negative thoughts with positive thoughts. If the coach yells out 15 more seconds, I push myself even harder.
It’s very good.
It’s such a great environment.
That’s one of the reasons I keep going back…
All of the amazing girls and they are so inspiring.
I can inspire women too.
How would you describe the community you’ve found at Delta Life?
It’s just simply amazing!
The instructors are telling you that you can do this.
They are encouraging you not to give up.
The support and the community is so amazing. I think that’s why the girls continue to push themselves.
The instructors here, instill in your head that it’s mind over body. Basically, you keep telling yourself that you can and will do it
It’s a great supportive group.
I also like the accountability with the Facebook groups, it’s another reason I keep going back.
What would you say to women who struggle and say they can’t do it, regarding their weight loss?
It just takes one day.
One step at a time.
Anyone can do it as long you set your mind to your goals.
You have to stay positive.
It can be done. I have seen it done so many times. I keep going every day because I have seen so many success stories.
I am a strong person so I know I can do this.
With Delta Life behind me, I know I can definitely achieve my goal this time around. I keep positive knowing that I have a strong team behind me, not only Delta Life but my family and my friends. They are very supportive.
I just have this confidence in myself this time.
What are some tips you would give women who are new or thinking about joining Delta Life?
I was one of those girls on the fence about joining when I saw the ad on Facebook.
I remember being very nervous and thinking what are they going to think of me?
or wondering if I was going to be able to keep up.
When I did join and saw the support, it was nothing like I thought.
It was a very embracing feeling.
Just jump and just do it.
I haven’t regretted it
What one word would you use to describe Delta Life?
I want to say empowered, but that’s too obvious because that’s the name of this series. So,
That’s my biggest thing.
People ask me why I go to this gym.
It’s because of the support and motivation.
I also tell people I show up to the classes and take advantage of everything the gym as to offer.
The girls and the instructors are so motivating. That’s why I go back.
If I miss a day or two, they notice and will ask me where I was.
I love it.
I’m glad I found Delta Life.
I know it’s going to change my life for the better.
I’m excited to see where I will be in a year.
