Delta Life Fitness had a chance to talk with one of the newest members of the Headquarters team, Melissa Hosbein. Melissa recently became the administrative assistant for the headquarters team. She has been a member of Delta Life Santa Rosa for almost two years now and has been actively working on becoming the best version of herself she can. As a member of the headquarters team she shares how Delta is literally chaning her life, both inside and outside of the gym facility.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was born and raised in Quebec, Canada. I moved to the Untied States in 2000. I have been married 13 years, and we have two awesome boys, 12 and 9. I stayed at home to raise my two boys for 10 years. I decided to go back to work and after three years of holding a position in a fast paced, demanding, mentally and physically exhausting job I chose to apply for the Delta Life Fitness HQ Administrative Assistant.
How long have you been a member of DLF?
I have been a member of Delta Life Fitness since June 2014. I drove by the Santa Rosa location everyday on the way to drop my sons off at school. Eventually I became curious and stopped by the facility. When I stopped in to check out the gym I met with Christin Cherry, and she invited me to try out DLF for a week. She invited me so I stayed FOREVER!
I loved the workouts from the very beginning. I loved the instructors. They push you. It was different every day, and I didn’t know what to expect. It was hard, but that was good. I don’t want to go to an easy workout, what’s the point in that? I could just go for a walk. I liked that every woman can do Delta Life. It’s like our own little community. I like that women would help push and challenge each other. It holds us accountable.
Name 3 things DLF has done to make you stronger as a person?
Delta Life has helped me push myself beyond what I thought I could do. It helped me not give up so early in workouts. I learned I could use a higher weight with my movements. It has helped me to step outside of my comfort zone.
I learned to push past the pain physically. It’s also mental. Even though your body is telling you that you can’t I now know that if I’m mentally strong I can accomplish anything. I stepped out of my comfort zone by approaching other members and helping them push themselves further.
Delta Life has made me aim higher. It has helped me reach my goals with help at every step of my journey. If I needed to finish a workout a fellow member would come by and do my remaining pushups with me. At Delta Life you’re never alone. There is always someone to help you and push you.
I will have a better family life because of my position at Delta Life
What makes DLF different in your eyes?
DLF is different than other gyms because it is more of a community. You might go to the workout alone, but there is always someone to help you with your workout and your journey. You have instructors and members to help you.
I’ve gone to other gyms before where it’s like, check I went. Delta Life is a journey, it’s not a check in the box kind of thing. There is a lot of support that you don’t get at other gyms. It’s more than just exercise, it’s nutrition, it’s information, it’s everything.
The workouts are movements that are easy to do on your own. You don’t need expensive equipment to complete the workouts at Delta Life. I could even do them at home if I needed to.
I like that it’s fast and there is no stopping. It is only 35 minutes, and anyone can do anything for 35 minutes. I don’t have to be there all day. I like that the workouts change everyday. It’s not the same old routine. I don’t know what the workout is going to be. It’s like a surprise. I love surprises!
DLF is different than other gyms because it is more of a community
You recently joined the DLF HQ team, can you tell me about that?
It has been a huge blessing not just for me but for my family. Honestly, from the first week I have started working out there I thought how awesome it would be to work for Delta Life. I remember this one time they needed a front desk person for the facility. I couldn’t at the time, and I knew something else would come along. When this position came up I knew it was meant for me.
My past job wasn’t fitting into my family life. I was enjoying what I was doing, but it wasn’t good for my family, which is the most important. I had to jump on the opportunity to join Delta Life. After meeting Nicole and Heather at my interview I prayed I would get this job. I also knew that if I didn’t get the job ultimately it had to be the right person for this position in Delta Life.
The Delta Life position has allowed me to quit my job. I also work from home and by quitting my job I am now able to work for DLF and also run my business from home. This is perfect because it’s the best of both worlds. I can be at home now to have family dinners and be there if my boys get sick. I will have a better family life because of my position at Delta Life.
How has Delta Life Fitness empowered you? As a member and now as a HQ employee?
As a member, Delta Life has empowered me to see myself as more than I thought I was. When you’re a mom sometimes you see yourself as “just a mom” and it has helped me to see myself as more valuable. As a mom your whole focus is on your family, you don’t think about yourself. Working out is my “me” time and it is for me. I am worth it. It brought me back to my earlier days when I used to be active and always playing sports. It woke that part of me up. It helped me love being active again. You get in the mode of “I’m just a mom”. Delta Life Fitness has shown me that I’m a person, and I still have goals, dreams and things I love besides my family.
As an employee, it has helped put my family first. It has helped get my priorities back in place. Getting this job is like an unplanned blessing. I was able to quit my job and focus on my family. It is going to help me explore that side of me that loves health and nutrition more.
It doesn’t just stop at the women, it affects the whole family
What do you think will be the most rewarding part of helping to change women’s lives?
Just being a part of this company is a reward. I think it will be rewarding to be a part of this, to be a part of the stories. We are changing women’s lives but at the same time that change is going to trickle down to their families. Their children and their husband will reap the rewards. They can be better mothers to their children and wives for their husbands.
It doesn’t just stop at the women, it affects the whole family. In a way that makes it even more rewarding than simply changing women’s lives. That’s huge because we’re changing an entire family. This happened for me when I was a member and for my family, and now I can help other women do the same thing.
How is Delta Life Fitness changing your life?
It helped me build confidence and value myself more. It gave me more of a positive view of myself. This in turn helped my relationship with my husband. When you meet your husband you’re a different person. The whole family dynamic changed. It’s a domino effect, you know? My relationship with my husband is better and it created a more positive environment for my children to grow up in.
It made me go back and think who am I and who do I want to be? It helped me see myself as person, and rediscover who I am and bring back the things I loved about myself. They were still there I just put them on hold for too long. You realize you can’t put “you” on hold because your children want to know you and who you are. If you put who you are on hold then they won’t get to know who you really are.
